Qualitative Coding
Overview
Covers AI tools that support qualitative data analysis, including thematic coding, content analysis, sentiment categorisation, and mixed-methods research. Primarily relevant to social scientists, health researchers, and arts and humanities researchers working with interview transcripts, documents, media, and other qualitative data.
AI features in this area augment established qualitative data analysis platforms rather than replacing them. Human interpretation and researcher engagement with the data remain essential.

Landscape notes
Established platforms adding AI: The three main QDA platforms (nvivo, maxqda, and Atlas.ti) have all added AI features. NVivo 15 and MAXQDA’s AI integrations are the most relevant to Sheffield at Q1 2026.
AI-suggested codes are the headline feature — but these require critical researcher review and should be treated as starting points for coding, not definitive analysis. Over-reliance on AI codes risks reducing researcher engagement with data.
MAXQDA teaching licences: Free course licences from MAXQDA make it immediately available for teaching and student research without procurement.
Workflow integration: Qualitative AI tools integrate with automatic-transcription (upstream) and data-collection via Qualtrics open-text analysis.
Methodological concern: AI coding tools are best suited to deductive or hybrid approaches. Purely inductive grounded theory approaches may be less well served by AI suggestions that could anchor researcher thinking prematurely.
