Autonomous Laboratories
Overview
Covers robotics and AI systems designed to automate or autonomously conduct experimental laboratory research. Ranges from simple automation (liquid-handling robots following pre-defined protocols) through to the longer-term vision of fully autonomous laboratories where AI systems design, execute, and iterate on experiments without human intervention.
This is the least mature capability area in practical terms for most universities, though it is an active research frontier.

Landscape notes
Maturity reality check: Full self-driving laboratories are 5–10 years from mainstream academic adoption. Current deployable technology (opentrons) automates defined protocols — it is not autonomous in the AI sense.
opentrons OT-2: Affordable, programmable liquid-handling robot suitable for academic budgets. Python-programmable. The most accessible entry point for laboratory automation. Relevant to chemistry, biology, and health sciences labs doing repetitive pipetting workflows.
ARIA funding: ARIA has funded pilot projects in AI Scientist / autonomous laboratory research. This is an active UK research funding priority — watch for pilot opportunities at Sheffield.
Infrastructure requirement: Physical lab space, equipment budgets, and technical expertise in protocol programming are prerequisites. Not a software-only procurement decision.
