Literature Review

Overview

Covers AI tools supporting systematic and exploratory surveys of academic literature. This is one of the most mature capability areas with multiple production-ready tools and genuine institutional licensing pathways. Divided into two sub-categories:

  1. Paper search: AI-powered discovery and synthesis of relevant literature
  2. Systematic review: Tools supporting the full systematic review workflow (screening, extraction, quality assessment)

Landscape notes

Arts & Humanities gap: Most tools optimise for empirical/STEM research with quantitative evidence synthesis. semantic-scholar and scite have the broadest disciplinary coverage. Tools like consensus and elicit that focus on scientific agreement metrics benefit humanities researchers less. Corpus gaps should be flagged when recommending tools to humanities researchers.

Low-hanging fruit: semantic-scholar is free, broadly disciplinary, and available immediately — recommend as a standard tool. research-rabbit is free and excellent for citation network discovery. asreview is open source and can be self-hosted with full data governance.

Systematic review: covidence is the established choice for formal systematic reviews (Cochrane standard). asreview covers the screening phase with active learning. rayyan offers a free alternative for teams without Covidence access.

Overlapping tools: Several tools span multiple capability areas — elicit and asta also appear in hypothesis-generation and data-analysis respectively.

Key concern across all tools: GDPR compliance and data residency are unconfirmed for most commercial tools. Recommend IT Services review before institutional recommendation for sensitive research data.
