What it does
ASReview (Active learning for Systematic Reviews) is an open-source tool developed at Utrecht University that uses active learning to prioritise title/abstract screening in systematic reviews. It learns from researcher decisions to surface the most relevant papers first, significantly reducing the workload for large systematic reviews.
Key capabilities
- Active learning-based title/abstract screening prioritisation
- Dramatically reduces time required for systematic review screening phases
- Open source — can be self-hosted with full data governance control
- Validated in peer-reviewed research on its effectiveness
- Integrates with standard systematic review export formats (RIS, CSV)
Fit for Sheffield researchers
High value for any researcher conducting systematic or scoping reviews, particularly in health sciences, social sciences, and education research. The open-source, self-hostable nature means data governance can be fully controlled by Sheffield IT Services. Recommend as the default AI screening tool for systematic reviews.
Licensing and access
Completely free and open source. Can be run locally or hosted on University infrastructure. No procurement required. Recommend IT Services evaluation for a shared institutional instance.
Trust and governance notes
Self-hosted deployment means no data leaves University infrastructure. GDPR compliance is fully achievable when self-hosted. Developed by a research university (Utrecht) with academic integrity in mind.
Observed limitations
- Requires initial labelling effort to train the active learning model
- Not a complete systematic review platform — handles screening only (see Covidence for full workflow)
- Technical setup required for self-hosting
