Hypothesis Generation

Overview

Covers AI tools designed to generate novel research hypotheses by synthesising large bodies of scientific literature. This is the least mature of the research lifecycle capability areas as a distinct product category. No production-ready, cross-disciplinary, institutionally deployable tool exists at time of review.

Hypothesis generation tools typically operate as research agents: they ingest hundreds or thousands of papers, identify patterns and gaps, and propose testable hypotheses grounded in the literature. This is distinct from ideation support (helping researchers think through their own ideas) — these tools attempt to autonomously produce novel scientific directions.

Landscape notes

Genuinely nascent: No mature, cross-disciplinary, production-ready AI hypothesis generation tool exists at Q1 2026. Both tools in this area (kosmos and google-co-scientist) are experimental.

kosmos (Edison Scientific): Most substantive offering — $200 per run, reads ~1,500 papers, uses structured world models across 42,000 lines of analysis code. Targeted use only due to cost. Requires expert validation before any experimental follow-through. STEM-focused.

google-co-scientist: Closed prototype — not accessible. Monitor for future availability.

Watch for: ARIA has funded pilot projects in this area. Expect significant developments 2026–2028 as agentic AI matures.

Scope limitation: Current tools are exclusively STEM-focused. No tools address hypothesis generation for arts, humanities, or interpretive social sciences.
