II-Agent / II-Researcher

Status: assess | Maturity: experimental | Last reviewed: 2026-03-20

What it does

II-Agent and II-Researcher are open-source agentic frameworks from Intelligent Internet (II) — the same organisation behind II-Commons (already catalogued). II-Agent is a general-purpose autonomous agent that can browse the web, execute code, and complete multi-step tasks. II-Researcher is a more focused variant designed specifically for AI-assisted research tasks including literature search, information synthesis, and report generation.

Both tools are early-stage open-source projects positioned as alternatives to commercial agentic platforms.

Key capabilities

  • Autonomous web browsing and information retrieval
  • Multi-step task completion with tool use
  • Research-oriented variant (II-Researcher) for literature and information synthesis
  • Open source and self-hostable
  • Compatible with multiple LLM backends

Fit for Sheffield researchers

Experimental tool — not recommended for operational research use at this stage. Of interest as:

  • A companion project to II-Commons (already catalogued) — from the same organisation
  • An open-source alternative to commercial web research agents (e.g. Perplexity, Gemini Deep Research)
  • A potential candidate for research computing evaluation if the codebase matures

Researchers interested in agentic tools should monitor II-Agent as it develops, given the Sheffield connection via II-Commons.

Licensing and access

Open source (licence details: check repository). Available on GitHub. Requires configuration with an LLM API key.

Trust and governance notes

Limited public documentation on data handling. Self-hosted deployment with locally-configured LLM backends would give maximum data governance control. For sensitive research tasks, do not use cloud LLM backends without appropriate data processing agreements.

Observed limitations

  • Very early stage — limited documentation and community support
  • Experimental quality — not suitable for critical research tasks
  • Web browsing agents may return unreliable or biased sources
  • Requires significant technical setup
  • Rapid development pace means API instability
