What it does
Claude Code is Anthropic’s agentic coding assistant, run from the terminal (command line). Unlike browser-based coding assistants, Claude Code operates directly within the researcher’s development environment — it can read files, run commands, edit code, and operate autonomously across multi-step programming tasks. It is built on Anthropic’s Claude models (Sonnet/Opus class).
Claude Code is designed for software development tasks: writing new code, debugging, refactoring, explaining codebases, writing tests, and managing files. The agentic design means it can autonomously complete multi-step coding tasks with minimal user intervention.
Key capabilities
- Terminal-based agentic coding (not just autocomplete — full task execution)
- Reads and edits files directly in the working directory
- Runs shell commands, tests, and scripts autonomously
- Multi-file codebase understanding and navigation
- Supports all major programming languages
- Git integration (commit, branch, diff)
- Subagent dispatch for parallel workstreams
- Memory system for context persistence across sessions
Fit for Sheffield researchers
Relevant to researchers who write code as part of their research — particularly data scientists, computational biologists, computational linguists, and research software engineers. Also relevant to Research Computing / CiCS teams developing research infrastructure.
Claude Code is higher-capability than browser-based assistants like GitHub Copilot for complex, multi-step research software tasks. Research Software Engineering teams at Sheffield should evaluate for internal use and potential support service.
Not recommended for researchers new to coding — requires confidence with terminal workflows and code review.
Licensing and access
Requires Claude Pro subscription (individual, ~£18/month) or Anthropic API key (pay-per-token). No institutional pricing for Claude Code specifically at time of review. Enterprise API customers can configure data handling terms.
Trust and governance notes
Claude Code sends code and file contents to Anthropic’s API for processing. Researchers should not run Claude Code in repositories containing sensitive research data, unpublished results, or personally identifiable information unless the appropriate data processing terms are in place with Anthropic.
Anthropic states that API inputs are not used to train models (for paying API customers). GDPR compliance status is unclear — Anthropic’s EU SCCs should be reviewed. Data residency is US.
Generated code must be reviewed and tested — research reproducibility depends on correct, well-tested code.
Observed limitations
- Terminal-based — requires familiarity with command line
- US data residency is a concern for sensitive data
- Agentic operation means mistakes can propagate (e.g. overwriting files) — use version control (git) at all times
- Context limits on very large codebases
- No institutional SSO
- Cost can escalate with heavy API usage (token-based pricing)
