What it does
Web of Science (WoS) AI Research Assistant is an AI layer integrated into the Clarivate Web of Science platform. It provides natural language query capabilities over the WoS literature corpus, AI-generated research summaries, and intelligent search refinement — all grounded in the WoS citation database rather than a general-purpose LLM’s parametric knowledge.
The AI assistant can summarise research on a topic, identify key papers and authors, explain trends in citation data, and help researchers frame literature review questions.
Key capabilities
- Natural language querying of the Web of Science corpus
- AI-generated summaries of research topics grounded in WoS records
- Citation-based insights: influential papers, research trends, key author networks
- Search refinement suggestions
- Source-grounded outputs with direct links to underlying WoS records
- Integrated with existing WoS institutional access
Fit for Sheffield researchers
High immediate value for Sheffield researchers across all faculties. The University of Sheffield Library already provides institutional WoS access. The AI Research Assistant is a low-barrier upgrade to an existing subscription tool — researchers already familiar with WoS can adopt it without a new workflow change.
Library and IT Services should confirm whether the AI features are included in Sheffield’s current Clarivate licence tier and, if not, assess the upgrade cost via Jisc/CHEST.
Licensing and access
Bundled with or as an add-on to institutional Web of Science licence. Clarivate offers Jisc CHEST pricing for UK higher education. Contact the Sheffield Library e-resources team to confirm current licence coverage.
Trust and governance notes
Outputs are grounded in WoS indexed records — hallucination risk is lower than general-purpose LLMs. Clarivate states that user queries do not train the underlying AI model (verify with current licence terms). Data residency is US (Clarivate infrastructure). GDPR status is unclear pending explicit vendor compliance statement; no personal data is typically involved in literature search queries.
Observed limitations
- Coverage biased towards STEM and English-language journals — less comprehensive for arts, humanities, and non-English scholarship
- AI summaries are only as good as WoS coverage for the topic
- Newer papers may not yet be indexed
- AI assistant features are distinct from WoS’s existing InCites/ESI analytics — ensure correct feature set is licensed
- Clarivate AI feature set is actively evolving — capabilities may change between reviews
