What it does
OpenAI Whisper is an open-source automatic speech recognition model that provides high-quality transcription across multiple languages. Sheffield’s on-premise Scriber service is built on Whisper, making it already available to Sheffield researchers without third-party data sharing.
Key capabilities
- High-accuracy automatic speech recognition and transcription
- Multi-language support
- Open source — can be deployed on-premise with full data governance control
- Sheffield’s Scriber service provides a web interface to Whisper running on University infrastructure
Fit for Sheffield researchers
Already available via the Sheffield Scriber service — immediate use without procurement. Suitable for interview transcription, lecture transcription, meeting notes, and research recordings. On-premise deployment means audio data does not leave Sheffield infrastructure.
Licensing and access
Open source (MIT licence). Deployed via Sheffield’s Scriber service at https://github.com/rcgsheffield/scriber-service. No additional cost or procurement required.
Trust and governance notes
On-premise Scriber deployment means audio data stays on Sheffield infrastructure — strong GDPR profile for research with sensitive or confidential audio data. This is the preferred route over commercial transcription services.
Observed limitations
- Transcription accuracy varies with audio quality, accent, and background noise
- Speaker diarisation (who said what) requires additional tooling
- Post-transcription editing is usually required for research-quality transcripts
