What it does
Obsidian is a personal knowledge management (PKM) tool that stores notes as local Markdown files with bidirectional linking. It is not primarily an AI tool but serves as a research knowledge base and note-taking environment that can be enhanced with AI plugins. Sheffield’s own AI Landscape Map is maintained in Obsidian.
Key capabilities
- Local-first Markdown note storage — files stored on device, not in cloud
- Bidirectional linking and graph view of knowledge relationships
- Large plugin ecosystem including AI integrations (e.g., local LLM connections)
- Free for personal/academic use
- Can integrate with tools like NotebookLM for AI-assisted analysis of note collections
Fit for Sheffield researchers
Useful as a personal research knowledge base for researchers who want to build connected, searchable notes without proprietary lock-in. The local-first approach gives strong data governance. However, Obsidian is not an AI tool itself — AI capabilities come from plugins or external integrations.
Licensing and access
Free for personal use. No institutional license or procurement required. Obsidian Sync (cloud sync feature) is a paid add-on but is not required for basic use.
Trust and governance notes
Local-first by default — notes stored on researcher’s device with no cloud dependency. Strong GDPR profile for sensitive research notes. Cloud sync features require separate evaluation.
Observed limitations
- Not an AI tool in itself — AI requires plugins or external integrations
- Learning curve for Markdown and linking conventions
- Not a collaborative research platform without additional setup
