What it does

Edison Scientific (the renamed FutureHouse platform) is an AI-powered research platform aiming to accelerate scientific discovery through autonomous literature synthesis, hypothesis generation, and experimental design. The platform builds on FutureHouse’s PaperQA2 technology (already catalogued separately) and positions itself as a step towards the AI Scientist concept — automating significant portions of the research cycle.

The platform includes tools for systematic literature review, structured question answering over scientific corpora, and is actively expanding towards experiment planning and closed-loop research.

Key capabilities

  • Systematic literature review and synthesis at scale
  • Hypothesis generation from literature patterns
  • Scientific question answering with citations (via PaperQA2)
  • Research platform combining multiple FutureHouse tools
  • Aiming towards end-to-end autonomous research pipeline

Fit for Sheffield researchers

High strategic interest for STEM faculties, particularly biomedical, chemistry, and materials research groups willing to be early adopters of agentic research tools. Edison Scientific represents a progression beyond single-tool AI assistance towards integrated research automation.

Access currently appears limited — researchers interested in piloting should contact Edison Scientific directly. R&I IT Services should monitor this as a key platform to evaluate in the autonomous-laboratories and hypothesis-generation space.

Licensing and access

No public self-service access at time of review. The platform appears to be in an early-access or partnership model. PaperQA2 (the core literature tool) remains open source separately. Contact vendor for institutional access discussions.

Trust and governance notes

As the platform handles scientific literature and potentially research data, data handling policies are critical to establish before any institutional engagement. Data residency likely US. No explicit GDPR compliance statement found at time of review.

Researchers should be aware that hypotheses and research directions suggested by AI tools may inadvertently disclose unpublished research directions — care needed if using with commercially sensitive projects.

Observed limitations

  • Access not broadly available — early-stage commercial platform
  • End-to-end autonomous research capability is aspirational; current tools are more incremental
  • Limited independent evaluation of platform quality
  • Vendor transition (FutureHouse → Edison Scientific) creates some uncertainty about roadmap continuity
  • Strong focus on biomedical/life sciences — breadth across all disciplines unclear
