What it does

AlphaEvolve is a Gemini-powered evolutionary coding agent from Google DeepMind that discovers mathematical constructions and optimises algorithms by iteratively proposing, testing, and refining Python programs. Rather than generating natural-language reasoning, it works in program space: each candidate solution is an executable Python function evaluated against a quantitative scoring criterion. The best-performing programs are selected, mutated, and recombined across thousands of iterations. Published results show AlphaEvolve solving 67 open mathematical problems — including improving bounds on cap-set size, matrix multiplication tensor rank, and extremal graph problems — and discovering optimisations adopted in production Google infrastructure (TPU scheduling, data-centre network routing). It is not a theorem prover; it targets constructive existence problems where the goal is to find an explicit object satisfying given criteria.

Key capabilities

  • Evolutionary search in program space — iteratively generates, scores, and recombines Python programs to optimise a user-supplied evaluation function
  • Multi-metric optimisation — can trade off multiple competing objectives simultaneously; supports population-based diversity to avoid premature convergence
  • Scale advantage — problems that previously required weeks of expert human exploration can be reduced to hours of automated search
  • Breadth across domains — demonstrated results in combinatorics, algebra, geometry, chip floorplanning, compiler optimisation, and data-centre scheduling
  • Integration with downstream proof tools — constructions found by AlphaEvolve can seed formal proof search via AlphaProof or Deep Think
  • Open results repository — code and discovered constructions released under Apache 2.0 / CC-BY on GitHub (google-deepmind/alphaevolve-results)

Fit for Sheffield researchers

Primarily relevant to researchers in applied mathematics, combinatorics, theoretical computer science, and computational engineering. Potential high-value applications include:

  • Discovering extremal combinatorial constructions (graph theory, coding theory)
  • Finding tighter bounds on algebraic objects (matrix multiplication, tensors)
  • Optimising numerical kernels or simulation parameters in computational physics
  • Algorithm design in theoretical CS (sorting networks, hashing, scheduling)

Non-trivial barrier to use: every problem must be reformulated as a Python evaluation function — a task requiring both domain expertise and software engineering skill. This is not a tool for general-purpose mathematical enquiry; it is a research instrument for specialists comfortable with quantitative formalisation. Early-access only; there is no self-service interface.

Licensing and access

AlphaEvolve is available only through an Early Access Programme via Google Cloud. No public pricing or general release date has been announced. Discovered results and associated code are published on GitHub under Apache 2.0 (code) and CC-BY (mathematical results). No institutional agreement or Jisc CHEST availability is known.

Trust and governance

AlphaEvolve runs on Google Cloud infrastructure (US data residency). Google Cloud’s Data Processing Addendum likely applies, but no AlphaEvolve-specific GDPR statement has been published. Institutional review by IT Services / Research IT would be required before using with unpublished research data. Rated unclear for GDPR compliance pending a formal DPA review. Data training policy is unknown — no explicit statement on whether submitted evaluation functions or discovered programs are used to train future models.

Observed limitations

  • Not a theorem prover — AlphaEvolve finds constructions but does not generate formal proofs; downstream formalisation (e.g. via AlphaProof or Harmonic Aristotle) is a separate step
  • Constructive problems only — unsuitable for non-constructive existence questions, pure proof-search, or problems without a computable evaluation function
  • Evaluation function quality determines output quality — a poorly specified scoring function will produce confidently wrong or trivially satisfying results
  • Early access only — no self-service; requires Google application and approval
  • Cloud-only — no offline or on-premises option; not suitable for sensitive or embargoed research data under current governance
  • No public pricing — budgeting for any institutional engagement is not currently possible
